PAX Olympus
I attended PAX East last weekend. At best, it was an experience full of hilarity and video gamey goodness. At worst, it was a semi-awkward nerdfest wherein I witnessed much gawking at the female sex. Now, I've gotten quite good at not being noticed in crowds, particularly by the aforementioned female sex. At these conventions, it can be expected to find people dressed up as various fictional characters (some less fictional - pretty sure I saw a "Modern Warfare 2" 'terrorist'), and, yes, many of them are women. Our group came across one girl in particular who was dressed, I was informed, as "Zero Suit Samus" - the heroine of the long-running "Metroid" franchise for Nintendo.
She was, predictably, surrounded by a group of males taking numerous pictures with their cell phones.
At one point in the day, while waiting in line, a couple of girls (one dressed as Lara Croft of "Tomb Raider") walked past. I caught them out of the corner of my eye, and that's pretty much where they stayed. My companion, however, said, "Whoo, check it out... photo op." I informed him that I was quite happy using my peripherals and that I didn't want to be "that guy."
You know... "that guy" - as in, pretty much everyone at this convention.
I have more to say on this subject, I'm sure, but I'll leave it there for now. More on PAX will be forthcoming. But I had a great time.
